INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED
Portraying Munya, Filamie Joy O. Sami, a 2nd year Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies (BA-ELS) student and member of Teyatro Dasuliman – the official and resident theatre company of Jose Rizal Memorial State University—Main Campus, displayed a remarkable feat as their short film “Rumbles of the Earth” won the Best Short Film at the Berlin NewGen Film Festival 2024, screened in Berlin, Germany, last October 20.
Conceptualized and expertly directed by Carl Joseph Lara, Rumbles of the Earth is the story of a 13-year-old Munya as she sets out on a courageous quest to find her missing mother during a solar eclipse amidst the frequent earthquakes in Mindanao, finding the thin line between reality and Filipino mythology as she encounters the mythical serpent “Bakunawa” in her journey for deeper truth about the world and self-understanding.
Producer of Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” and Berlin NewGen Film Festival Jury Philippe Bober penned, “This ambitious surreal short skillfully blends fantasy and reality. Bold and well-crafted, it features striking special effects, strong cinematography, immersive sound design, and powerful performances. Through its profound exploration of loss, the film leaves ample room for the viewer’s imagination and interpretation,” commending the film for its overwhelming overall appeal to its audience.
“Rumbles of the Earth” is set to make its mark at the prestigious Singapore International Film Festival (SGIFF) from November 28 to December 8, 2024.
The JRMSU community, headed by the University President, Dr. Maria Rio Abdon Naguit, extends its heartfelt felicitations and congratulations to our exceptional Filamie Joy O. Sami.
