JRMSU hoist sails with IAMU, MARINA; PAES visit successful
In pursuit of enhancing the quality of University’s maritime instruction and development programs, Jose Rizal Memorial State University, together with the representatives from the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) and the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), conducted a two-day on-site Peer-Assisted Evaluation Scheme (PAES) in the College of Maritime Education (CME) building, November 5-6, 2024.
In his opening speech last November 5, Dr. Jay D. Telen, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), articulated the University’s commitment to delivering high-quality education through robust partnerships, with the aim of helping CME students excel in this field professionally.
“We are committed to delivering high-quality education that meets international standards. Our partnership with industry leaders and regulatory bodies ensure that our curriculum remains relevant, rigorous, and responsive to the needs of the marketplace. Together, we are preparing our students not just to enter the workforce but to excel in it […] Let us reaffirm our commitment to quality maritime education. Together, we can empower the next generation of maritime professionals to navigate the future with confidence and competence.”
During the on-site evaluation, the working group from IAMU; Prof. Damir Zec of the University of Rijeka, Croatia and Prof. Inga Bartuseviciene of the World Maritime University, Sweden; and MARINA; Ms. Emma Lyn P. Pabutawan, Maritime Industry Development Specialist of the Marina Central Office; Ms. Farida T. Cunanan, Ph.D., the OIC Director MARINA-Regional Office IX; and Mr. Herbert V. Nalupa, MET Standards Supervisor MARINA Central Office, together with the CME Dean 2/M Expedito B. Columnas, Jr., visited various laboratories for inspection, providing valuable insights and recommendations to bolster the quality and effectiveness of the University’s maritime programs and ensure that they meet global standards and best practices.
In his closing remarks, CME Dean Columnas expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the valuable insights and recommendations provided by the IAMU representatives during the 2-day PAES at JRMSU.
“As we conclude this enriching two-day Peer-Assisted Evaluation Scheme activity, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Professor Damer Zec from the University of Rijeka, Croatia, and Professor Inga from the World Maritime University, Sweden, for their invaluable insights and thoughtful recommendations. Your expertise and constructive feedback have been truly enlightening. Your contributions are crucial in guiding us toward strengthening the programs and practices at the College of Maritime Education here at the Jose Rizal Memorial State University. The recommendations you’ve provided will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping our efforts to enhance the quality of education and training, bringing us closer to our goal of becoming a world-class institution,” dean Columnas said.
The University President, Dr. Maria Rio Abdon Naguit, alongside the steadfast Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), Dr. Jay D. Telen, and the whole JRMSU community, warmly welcomes the recommendations from the representatives of IAMU and MARINA to further meet the global quality of Maritime Education and Training (MET) provided by the Maritime Higher Education Institutions (MHEIs) in the Philippines.
