JRMSU, NRCP seal funding via MOA contract signing for a new research project
Marking the formal launch of a 1.9 million funded research project, Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU), together with the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), a government entity and attached agency to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), has officially signed a Memorandum of Agreement to the project led by Prof. Herford Rei B. Guibangguibang, Assistant Professor III from JRMSU-Tampilisan Campus, last November 12, at the Office of the University President, JRMSU-Main Campus.
The project titled “Sea Gypsies’ Identity: The Language Documentation and Analysis of Sama-Badjao in Gil Sanchez, Labason, Zamboanga del Norte” is one of the projects lined up for implementation under the NRCP Grants-in-Aid and is aligned with the National Integrated Basic Research Agenda (NIBRA) on Inclusive Nation Building and is considered a joint research initiative by Mr. Guibangguibang and of the NRCP.
This project aims to comprehensively document the Badjao language as spoken by the Badjao community in Gil Sanchez, Labason, and Zamboanga del Norte, capturing its use in daily activities such as narratives, conversations, procedural discourses, and songs/chants. The goal is to create a detailed language sourcebook and an accessible online dictionary, which will preserve the linguistic heritage and provide valuable educational resources for both the community and interested researchers.
The NRCP GIA program is aligned with the National Integrated Basic Research Agenda (NIBRA), which prioritizes research areas that address pressing societal problems such as water scarcity, food security, clean energy, diseases and hazards, population displacement, urban decay, poverty, social conflict, Filipino identity, and climate change. NIBRA aims to guide funding towards significant areas of basic research that will benefit the nation and support sustainable development goals.
The JRMSU community, headed by the University President, Dr. Maria Rio Abdon Naguit, is genuinely excited about the project’s progress and the invaluable knowledge it promises to bring.
