JRMSU-UDRRMS earns back-to-back Gawad Kalasag recognition for excellence in disaster resilience

“December 9 —For two consecutive years, Jose Rizal Memorial State University (JRMSU), led by the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Services (UDRRMS), has made an indelible mark in the field of disaster risk reduction and management, securing the prestigious Gawad Kalasag Seal Award in 2023 and 2024, during the 24th Gawad KALASAG National and Regional Awarding Ceremony at The Pavilion Hall, Pagadian City.

Hosted by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Region IX under Regional Director Ramon M. Ochotorena, the Gawad KALASAG awards are among the highest honors for disaster risk management that acknowledge Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that have implemented effective DRRM programs, contributed to building resilient communities, and shown outstanding performance in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. This rare back-to-back achievement is a testament to the University’s deep commitment to disaster resilience and dedication to maintaining strong disaster preparedness programs and its proactive approach to community safety.

Delegations from JRMSU, led by Dr. Victor B. Bernido, Director of UDRRMS; Dr. Reynaldo M. Venezuela, UDRRMS Chairperson and Vice President for Administration; Ms. Shemeah J. Saldon, UDRRMS staff; Mr. Vincent Cris Hisula, UDRRMS RETT; and Ms. Luzminda T. Gumabat, UDRRMS volunteer, received the prestigious award in recognition of their outstanding contributions.

JRMSU’s success in winning the Gawad Kalasag deal two years in a row serves as an inspiration for other institutions and organizations, setting the standard for universities nationwide, showing that fostering disaster resilience is an ongoing, vital effort that extends beyond the classroom to the heart of the community.

The JRMSU community, headed by the University President, Dr. Maria Rio Abdon Naguit, extends its heartfelt felicitations and congratulations to the remarkable feat of the University’s DRRMS.
