STANDING FOR RESILIENCE
JRMSU DRRMS advocates Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Management (CBDRRM)
To champion community resilience and preparedness while strengthening disaster awareness and response of the local barangays, the Office of the University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Services (UDRRMS), led by Dr. Victor B. Bernido, spearheaded a Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Management (CBDRRM) Extension Project, which culminated on December 18, 2024 at the Dapitan City Cultural and Sports Center.
Facilitated by UDRRMS Head of Operations, Prof. Randy G. Elopre, in cooperation with the University Extension Office, headed by Prof. Bobmil Flores, together with the active participation of the UDRRMS Chairperson Dr. Reynaldo M. Venezuela, facilitated a 5-day CBDRRM Training for its first batch of trainees coming from the seven Dapitan City barangays: Ba-ao, Liyang, Ilaya, Owaon, Oyan, San Pedro, and San Vicente.
Institutionalizing a sustainable CBDRRM Program, this community extension project, empowers local communities to actively engage in disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery, ensuring that disaster preparedness is a collaborative effort with communities as key drivers of their safety and resilience.
This initiative aligns with the UDRRMS flagship program, Humanitarian Emergency Assistance for Resiliency and Timely Services (HEARTS), which observes four (4) Thematic Areas: Preparedness, Response, Prevention and Mitigation, Recovery and Rehabilitation. Through Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Control (HIRAC) and Spot Mapping, participants identified vulnerabilities and potential risks in communities, fostering a proactive approach in disaster management.
The University President, Dr. Maria Rio Abdon Naguit, expressed her appreciation to Dr. Bernido for this transformative extension effort, as well as to the participating barangays for their cooperation. Also present to support the program are the following University key officials: Vice President for Research, Development, and Extension Dr. Rizza Bagalanon, Dapitan Campus Director Dr. Patrick G. Galleto together with Hon. Sushmita Jalosjos.
By promoting community-based strategies, JRMSU empowers barangays to serve as the first line of defense during disasters. Kudos to JRMSU DRRMS Office for inspiring this shared commitment to building a safer and a more resilient Dapitan!
