Reading Reinforcement Program for High Schoolers – Phase 1
(Assessment with Intervention)
Jose Rizal Memorial State University-Siocon Campus
Narrative Report on the GAD Lecture and Brochure Distribution during the Culminating
Activity of the Extension Project

On March 15, 2025, a
significant highlight of the
culminating activity of the Bachelor
of Secondary Education major in
English (BSED-English) Extension
Project titled Reading
Reinforcement Program for High
Schoolers – Phase 1 (Assessment
with Intervention) took place at
Julian Soriano Memorial
Comprehensive High School. This
program, spearheaded by the
College of Teacher Education
(CTED) of Jose Rizal Memorial State
University – Siocon Campus, aims to provide strategic support to identified struggling readers in Grade 7. These beneficiaries were carefully selected through the recommendation of Reading Coordinator for English- Ma’am Margie Micubo
During this culminating event, Mr. Kent Jestoni Q. Gabo, the Gender and Development
(GAD) Unit Head, delivered a short yet insightful lecture on Basic Gender and Development
Concepts to the Grade 7 students. His talk focused on fundamental principles such as the
distinction between sex and gender, the nature of gender roles, and the advocacy for gender
equality and gender equity. He emphasized that gender should not be a barrier to one’s growth
and potential, and that everyone—regardless of gender—deserves equal rights and
opportunities.

Mr. Gabo encouraged the students to practice GAD by treating everyone with respect, challenging stereotypes, speaking up against unfair treatment, and supporting each other’s dreams. His delivery was interactive and age-appropriate, ensuring that the young audience could grasp these important concepts.
Following his talk, the team conducted the distribution of GAD brochures, titled Empowering Women.

The activity was both
educational and empowering. It
not only reinforced the reading
skills of the students but also
broadened their awareness of
gender and development issues.
The initiative successfully merged
academic support with values
education, in line with JRMSU’s
commitment to holistic and
inclusive learning.
This event marked a meaningful end to the first phase of the extension program, leaving a lasting impact on its young beneficiaries—both as learners and as future advocates of gender equality
In line with CMO #1 s.2015, JRMSU-GAD implements a Gender-Responsive Extension Program through technical assistance and linkages. Technical assistance involves providing professional expertise such as consultancy services, mentoring, counseling, and advisorship by trainers, professionals, and GAD experts. Meanwhile, linkages focus on establishing partnerships and networks with government agencies, non-government organizations (GOs/NGOs), and civil society organizations at both local and international levels to support gender and development initiatives. JRMSU-GAD ensures that all collaborations with recognized GAD-related entities align with national development strategies, promote gender equality, and empower women.
